DEF

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is an emissions control liquid required for modern diesel engines (years 2010 and later) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology systems. The fluid is a non-hazardous solution of urea and de-ionized water that is clear and colorless with a slight smell of ammonia. DEF is not a fuel additive, there is a separate tank for this fluid and it never comes into contact with diesel fuel. It is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. The consumption rate of this fluid is roughly 2-3% of diesel fuel. Therefore, for every 100 litres of diesel fuel you will use 2 to 3 litres of DEF.
